The Misery Manual (And How to Burn It)

Want to know the secret to living a miserable life? Or do you want the antidote that will remedy 90% of these unhappiness ailments?

Goal setting.

Plain and simple.

Here are 5 guaranteed ways to be unhappy and how setting goals is the cure.

1. Chase short-term pleasure - Everything worthwhile is on the other side of hard. Don't hit eject just because it gets tough. If you can see your trophy, it'll make it easier to power through temporary hardships, and you'll feel stronger at the end.

2. Wait for the perfect moment - As my farmer friends say, "Those who wait for perfect weather never plant." There are no perfect moments. Only moments you MAKE perfect by taking action. Set a goal and timeline – that perfect moment is in the schedule!

3. Make your happiness conditional - The biggest lie we tell ourselves: "When I get X, then I'll be happy.” If you're not enough without 'it,' you'll never be enough with it. That might sound contradictory to goal setting, but here's the secret – you need to already enjoy what you're doing to reach your goal.

4. Let negative people drain your energy - People either propel you forward or anchor you down. There's no middle ground. Give everyone a second chance, but never a third. With clear objectives, you'll see exactly who helps and who holds you back.

5. Expect someone to save you  - No one is coming to save you. But here's the twist: That's the best news ever. You can set whatever intention you want! I can set reading 50 books as my goal, and no one will force me to do it – because truthfully, if they did, I wouldn't want to anymore. It's a goal, not a punishment.

Your life changes the second you stop waiting for permission to live it. Decide what you want, make a plan, and let 'er rip. You’ll see just how much fulfillment comes from acting with a purpose.
