When Two Worlds Collide

When most people think about work-life balance, they picture a scale – two sides that need to weigh exactly the same amount. But what if I told you there was an even better way to think about it?

Work-life balance is actually more like a Venn diagram. I know it sounds like a silly metaphor. But bear with me.

There's pure "work" stuff:

  • grinding through spreadsheets

  • sitting in endless meetings

  • building yet another pitch deck

And there's pure "life" stuff:

  • binge-watching your favorite show

  • family dinners

  • weekend hikes with the dog.

But then there’s this zone. The moments of life that sneak into work. And honestly, those moments are really important.

  • Your work bestie who makes Monday mornings bearable.

  • Those moments when you see just how your work matters.

  • The extra day you tack onto a business trip to play tourist in a new city.

These aren't work things or life things – they're both. You can’t have these “life moments” without the “work” ones.

These overlapping moments give you something to look forward to and build the drive to show up every day. They're what transform "just a job" into something that feels more human.

Everyone knows the water cooler isn't really just for hydration, right? It's for those micro-moments of connection that remind us we're people, not productivity machines.

So maybe instead of obsessing over perfect balance, we should focus on appreciating the overlap. Because the best work doesn't feel separate from life – it feels like part of it.
