Stop and Smell ... That Sweet, Sweet Entrepreneurial Freedom!
One of the big reasons people decide to become entrepreneurs is for the freedom. It’s true that they love what they’re doing and believe in its impact, but it’s also the appeal of being able to be your own boss and make your own hours. So, if freedom and flexibility were the reasons you became an entrepreneur – why are you still doing it all?
Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I struggle with this too! But when I start feeling like I’m muscling through all of the work, I like to take a beat and remind myself that I don’t need to do so much.
Most recently, I was in NYC for my son’s birthday. I could have scheduled meetings while I was there, and I could have been checking my email every hour. But I didn’t. And my two businesses didn’t skip a beat. There were no back-to-back emails, no urgent phone calls, just presence and living in the moment.
With 30 years of experience in building businesses and advising leaders, I’ve learned that your business needs to work for you. Not the other way around. Yes, there are seasons that demand more of that hustle and grind, but that can’t be your everyday. The cliches like “stop and smell the roses” are there for a reason.
If you are constantly missing life’s key moments (like your child’s birthday), checking your phone at the dinner table, or unable to turn off those work notifications for even one day – it might be time for a rest. And truthfully, you might be micromanaging without even realizing it!
Take that time away! I've helped leaders of all shapes and sizes across every sector build operations that don't demand your constant presence but deliver consistent results. Because being your boss shouldn’t feel like a permanent 24/7 gig.
