Right People, Right Seats: Why It Matters More Than You Think

You've probably heard the phrase "right people, right seats" a thousand times. But let's be honest—actually making it happen is where most organizations struggle. Getting this right isn't just about organizational charts and job descriptions. It's about building a team that's energized, aligned, and driving your business forward. 

 

Understanding Team Strengths 

Start by really knowing your people. Look beyond their resumes and dig into what makes them tick. What are their actual skills versus what their title suggests they should be doing? What motivates them to do their best work? Where do they see themselves in two or three years? These conversations often reveal hidden talents or misalignments that have been holding your team back. 

 

Clearly Define Responsibilities and Expectations 

Here's something we don't talk about enough: sometimes poor performance isn't about ability. It's about clarity. Does everyone on your team truly understand what's expected of them? Are their responsibilities clearly defined, or are there gray areas causing confusion? Having these explicit conversations can be eye-opening. You might discover that someone's been avoiding a task not because they can't do it, but because they genuinely didn't know it was theirs to own. 

 

Flexibility Is Key 

Your business isn't static, so why should your organizational structure be? As your company evolves, people grow, develop new skills, and discover new passions. Check in regularly to ensure your team members still fit where they're planted. Sometimes the best hire isn't a new one—it's moving someone internally to where they'll thrive. 

 

Making the Tough Decisions 

And sometimes, despite your best efforts, someone just isn't working out in their role. Whether it's repositioning them or parting ways, delaying these decisions helps no one. It's tough, but it's also necessary for the health of your business and, ultimately, for that individual's career path. 

 

Getting the right people in the right seats isn't a one-time exercise. It's an ongoing practice that requires attention, honesty, and courage. When people are in positions that align with their goals and desires, they are happier and do better work.
